The sUAS (small Unmanned Aerial System) team consists of twenty department personnel with representation from Bomb Squad, Crime Scene Investigations, Detectives, Gang Suppression Unit, Park Rangers, Patrol, Search and Rescue, and Technology Services.
sUAS have become valuable tools in law enforcement by providing quick, safe, and cost-effective aerial perspectives during a wide range of operations, including:
- Search and rescue operations to assist in locating missing persons and coordinating rescue efforts in dangerous conditions
- Remotely inspect hazardous situations including hazardous material spills, explosive devices, and unsafe areas due to environmental factors
- Document crime scenes in great detail from an aerial perspective
- Provide real time visual information to a Command Post during critical incidents including natural disasters or law enforcement operations
- During high-risk situation such as searches for wanted subjects, barricaded subjects, and hostage rescues
Because sUAS can be deployed rapidly and reach areas that are difficult or dangerous for officers to access, they help improve decision-making, enhance officer safety, and increase overall operational efficiency.
