S.A.A.I.U.

Kern County Sheriff's Office

The Sexual Assault and Abuse Investigation Unit (S.A.A.I.U.) is responsible for investigating reported abuse and molestation of children, sexual assaults, compliance of registered sex offenders, along with the investigation of missing persons within the metropolitan Bakersfield area and other unincorporated areas of Bakersfield.

S.A.A.I.U. Detectives also assist in child death investigations and participate in the Kern County Child Death Review Committee. Upon request, S.A.A.I.U. Detectives provide assistance and resources to investigators in outlying substations and work in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies on the local, state, and federal level, along with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Staffing consists of a Sergeant that supervises five Senior Deputies, a Special Deputy, two Sheriff’s Aides, and an Office Service Technician. The Sergeant determines case assignments and acts as the S.A.A.I.U. liaison with allied agencies, concerned citizens and the news media.

S.A.A.I.U. Detectives are subject matter experts in their field. Approximately 400 generated cases per year are investigated by S.A.A.I.U. Detectives, along with receiving in excess of 950 emergency response referrals cross-reported to S.A.A.I.U. by Child Protective Services each year.

Another function of S.A.A.I.U. Detectives is the compliance of registered sex offender registration and the investigation of approximately 1800 missing person investigations reported in the metropolitan Bakersfield area each year.

Court Complaint Officers are also part of S.A.A.I.U. and are responsible for filing generated compliant request of Metropolitan Patrol Deputies and Detective Division with the District Attorney’s Office. S.A.A.I.U. is also staffed with an Office Service Technician that assists S.A.A.I.U. Detectives with registered sex offender compliance and tracking.
