AB900 Jail Construction

  • August 7, 2012: Kern County received an AB900 $100 million conditional award from the State of California for the construction of a new detentions facility.
  • Proposed AB900 Facility will provide Inmate Housing, medical and mental health treatment, administrative, support, and program space.
  • New facility is approximately 216,000 sq. ft.
  • 822 inmate beds: Medium Security, Maximum Security, Medical, Mental Health.
  • Facility will include: infirmary, inmate video visiting, recreation space, laundry area, food services, warehouse/utility services, and maintenance space.

  • 9 inmate programs rooms will be constructed for inmate programs which will be designed to reduce recidivism by better preparing inmates for re-entry into the community.

Project Status:

  • County Contracted with Balfour Beatty & HOK: Dec. 2014
  • Completion of Design & Construction of Project: Dec. 2014 thru June 2017
  • Staffing and Occupancy: Sept. 2017
